Mango
History and origin
Native to the forests of India, the mango is a sacred fruit for Hindus and has been cultivated for over 4,000 years. His shadow was even chosen by Buddha to meditate on. In the 16th century, the Arabs introduced the mango tree to Africa, and the Portuguese to Central and South America. Today, mango is grown in all tropical regions. Although popular in the United Kingdom via Indian cuisine, it only arrived in France late, long perceived as a luxury product until the 1970s.
Variety and cultivation
Mango is grown in tropical or subtropical climates with well-drained soil. The trees, which can produce for decades, are planted at densities of 100 to 400 trees/ha. World production is growing, despite the difficult management of insects and fungi. Popular varieties: Alphonso, Kesar, Kent, Tommy Atkins
