Ruby Peach
History and origin
“Vine peach” refers to a type of late peach, often with dark red flesh and grayish skin, ripening at the same time as the vine. In France, it is also known as blood peach. Coteaux du Lyonnais winegrowers used to plant peach trees in the middle of their vines, because these trees, sensitive to powdery mildew, served as early indicators to detect this disease and protect the vines. Vine peach is therefore linked to a wine-growing tradition, allowing producers to monitor the health of their vineyards.
Variety and cultivation
Vine peaches, small, fluffy and with deep red flesh, thrive in a temperate, sunny climate, similar to that of vines. Traditionally grown without pesticides, they promote sustainable agriculture. Only variety easily reproduced by stone, unlike grafted peach trees.
Did you know?
The flowers and leaves of the peach tree, just like the stones – as well as the stones of most Prunus – contain traces of hydrocyanic acid. They were once used as sedative remedies and were rightly recommended peach blossom syrup in the treatment of whooping cough.
