Apricot

History and origin

The apricot, a stone fruit of the Prunus genus, originates from China, where it has been cultivated for more than 2000 years. During its journey to the West, it acquired the name Prunus armeniaca, in reference to Armenia. Introduced to the Middle East in the 1st century BC, it was not cultivated in France until the 18th century. Turkey, the world’s largest producer, favors it in dried form. The name “apricot” comes from the Catalan “al-Bercoc”, itself derived from the Arabic “al barq”. A fascinating story that spans centuries and continents.

Variety and cultivation

In France, nearly 40 varieties of apricots adapt to various climates. This diversity is supported by varietal research and modern techniques (anti-hail nets, anti-frost candles). Producers invest all year round in pruning, thinning and manual picking to guarantee an optimal harvest.

Did you know?

The apricot is surrounded by folklore and tradition, particularly in France, where it is considered a good luck charm when eaten directly from the tree.
